Overview - What is a State Team?
The AFP Founders recognize that far more than a two-day Summit will be required to hammer out achievable strategies for helping persons with developmental disabilities achieve meaningful, fully integrated, competitive employment. To succeed, a long-range social reform agenda must be rooted in the realities of local political, social and economic environments. That's why the State Teams are so important
Leading up to, during and following the 2011 Summit, AFP will provide state teams with resources to help assess their current employment practices, determine areas that they would like to focus on for improvement, and create an action plan for achieving these goals. AFP will provide access to best practices throughout the country and help state teams build a network of others throughout the United States who are dedicated to achieving the vision of fully integrated employment.
State Teams should be composed of representatives of the various constituencies within the developmental disabilities community and, should include the voices of individuals with developmental disabilities, employers, families, policy makers, providers, researchers and community builders. These teams will be called to think deeply about employment supports for people with developmental disabilities as they are now and as we hope they will be in the future
State Teams are a vehicle to build state-wide coalitions representing all key stakeholders that will provide input, feedback and direction to the national summit organization process. Our expectation is that state teams will bring the Summit’s action agenda back to their communities so tha the vision and outcomes agreed upon in Washington can become a reality nationwide.
