Breakout Sessions: Leadership
1. Expanding Self-Advocacy at the Local, State and National Level -
A look at successful
strategies to expand participation, develop leadership,
and support peer-mentorship within the selfadvocacy
community. Moderator: James Meadours,
Arc of Baton Rouge
2. Emerging Models of Leadership in the
Family Support Movement A look at how
consumer/family driven, community coalition
building is being used as a tool to create and
sustain successful systems change and create
more inclusive and accessible communities that
support all residents. Moderator: Susan Fox,
Institute on Disability, University of New Hampshire
3. Changing of the Guard A focus on the
changes taking place in state service delivery
systems (e.g., retirements, reorganizations,
consolidations), the loss of history, and the resulting
implications for the next generation of public
policy makers and program administrators.

4. Supporting the Next Generation of
Professional Leaders An overview of best
practices in the identification, support and
education of professionals, including initiatives
such as LEND program, mandatory coursework
and orientation. The panel will also look at the
different experiences, values and beliefs across
generations of leaders and their relevance to
leadership development. Moderator: Ruth

5. Building Self-Advocate, Family and
Support Leadership via Community
Organizing Change doesnt just happen. It is
brought to reality through a process of planning
and follow-through called organizing. This session
provides an overview of community organizing
practices that build knowledge and create sustained
leadership within the disability community
for self advocates, families, and supporters. The
focus of this session is on involving self advocates
and families in solving their own problems.

6. Leadership in Research: What are the
Issues and Who Will Tackle Them? A look
at the important topics facing the next generation
of researchers and ways in which the existing
research community can motivate college students
to take up these challenges. Moderator:

7. Building Leadership In Diverse
Communities A focus on leadership development
among self-advocates, family members,
staff and administrators in culturally and racially
diverse communities. Moderator: Royal P. Walker,
Jr., JD, University of Southern Mississippi
8. Emerging Advocacy Agenda Setting
Priorities and Recruiting the Next Generation
of Individual and Policy Advocates An
exploration of emerging advocacy and rights
issues, the strategies that can be adopted to
tackle these issues, and the places to find new
individual and policy advocates. Moderator:
Lorriane Sheehan, The Arc of the United States
9. Power and Empowerment Power is
probably the most important ingredient in
politics, advocacy, and citizenship. Self-advocates
who challenge the government, service providers,
or the authority of others need to understand how
to equalize power. This panel explores different
ideas and strategies to equalize power between
self-advocacy groups and other major stakeholders.
